Description

Deconsecrated Church of St. Mary

A characteristic gently sloping street lined with houses dating back to the early 1800s leads to the deconsecrated Church of St. Mary, which dates to around the 16th century. In 1612, it served as a shelter for the poor and the sick, and in 1792, it became a place of refuge for illegitimate newborns abandoned on the churchyard. In 1752, the priest was Don Gennaro Siciliano, and by the 1800s, it was closed due to financial difficulties. The perimeter walls were later demolished to make way for the construction of the rectory. Today, only the dome and the crypt remain, while the mechanism of the ancient clock has been lost.
