Description
Crucoli Castle
The castle, of which only the outer walls and towers remain today, is shrouded in an aura of mystery. Located in the heart of the town, it dominates the landscape with its imposing structure. Very little is known about its original construction and former grandeur. Historical sources indicate that the castle’s layout is of Norman origin, with renovations and expansions carried out in the 15th and 17th centuries by the D’Aquino and Amalfitano families.
In 1674, a devastating fire severely damaged Crucoli, followed by a Turkish assault on August 20, 1697.
In a large collection of notarial acts from the early 1900s concerning municipal lands, we find the following passage:
“In Crucoli, there was a magical and impregnable castle,” reads the manuscript, “located in the center of the town. It is accessed by a noble and long cobbled ramp with a gentle incline, so gentle that it can still be climbed by carriage. At the end of the road is an open courtyard, separated from the castle, which is accessed through a wooden door. The castle is fortified with six bastions or towers that look out in various directions. It stretches in all directions to the point where the mere view is theatrical; one can see both the sea and the mountains, connected by hills and plains—a sight that delights every visitor. In the center of the castle stands a kind of citadel or fortress, with very ancient walls, now abandoned, though they have stood for centuries and could still shelter up to 1,000 people in case of need.”
(from “The History of Crucoli” by Nunzio Esposito)
A careful analysis of the walls reveals multiple construction phases, recognizable by different masonry techniques from various historical periods. These phases, in chronological order, are as follows:
10th–12th centuries: Norman foundation
12th–17th centuries: Renovations by ruling families (Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, D’Aquino, Amalfitano)
17th–20th centuries: Later adaptations
1950–1980 to present day: Various restorations
A walk around Crucoli Castle allows visitors to enjoy the remarkable natural and scenic heritage of the area and, in doing so, to rediscover the very soul of Crucoli, expressed through its history and traditions—preserved in the stones and the view that continues to inspire all who visit.
